Online Hate Speech International Seminar

Hate speech has been present throughout human history, spanning different cultures and eras. Today, it has become more complex due to the impact of digital technologies like the Internet, social media platforms, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These harmful narratives promote intolerance, tear apart the social fabric, and threaten the integrity of social minorities, including immigrants, Black people, and LGBTQI+ individuals.

In the digital age, hate speech has become more intricate and varied. It spreads rapidly, often influencing behaviours beyond the borders where it originated. Hate is now pervasive, interactive, and multimedia, available 24/7, and reaching a much broader audience. Haters can remain anonymous, find support from like-minded aggressive individuals, and use numerous tactics to obscure their violent intentions.

To contribute to this crucial discussion, LabCom Media Studies Group and Editorial Universidad Icesi (Colombia) are organizing three sessions of the Online Hate Speech International Seminar. This online event will feature researchers from various countries across the Global South and Global North. The initiative is part of the promotion of the Online Hate Speech Trilogy, which is available for open access on the publishers’ websites:
